Background

The Power Supplies and Radio Frequency Department of CCFE at Culham is responsible for the design and operation of plasma heating and fuelling and auxiliary equipment (including RF and Microwave Generators and Power Supplies) at the JET facilities as well as contributing to the execution and evaluation of the EFDA-JET experimental programme.

The ICRH Systems Group’s main responsibilities are to operate, maintain and repair the large 32MW Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) system which operates in the frequency range of 23-57MHz.

Main Responsibilities

The RF Engineer will assist with the group’s activities, particularly:

1. Development of the ICRH plant, its high power RF amplifiers, transmission line & matching systems and control & protection electronics.
2. Performance of projects through contracts and specialist firms. This will involve the writing of specifications, tender evaluations, contract monitoring, factory acceptance testing, on-site commissioning and documentation.
3. Acting as an ICRH pilot in charge of operating the ICRH system during JET operation shifts..
4. Organisation of maintenance, reliability improvement and operation of the RF generators, including the supervision of technicians and contractors involved in this work.
5. Responsibility for the writing of risk assessments and method statements to ensure any work is carried out safely.

Desirable Qualifications, Aptitudes and Experience

  Qualified to degree level or equivalentExperience of high power, high frequency (1-200MHz) systems, possibly gained in a scientific background.Knowledge of high frequency circuits, techniques and measurements.Experience in the simulation of high frequency circuits and systems will be an advantage.Ability to supervise a team of technicians and contractors.Ability to co-operate and work with others.Ability to work within a team and in a regulated safety and QA environment is essential.A working knowledge of the English language is essential.

Special Features

JET experiments run from 06:30 until 22:00, and some control-room shift working will therefore be required to support operations.

3. There will be no formal line management or financial responsibility.
4. Work on hardware systems must comply with the CCFE safety and quality systems.
